CSG started implementing Building Information Modeling (BIM) fifteen years ago. Technology has been critical in enabling the company to participate in large-scale projects.
FREMONT, CA: Connected Structural Group, structural engineering and steel detailing firm based in the United States, employs Bluebeam, SDS2, and RISA to construct casinos, airports, hospitals, campuses, and other facilities. These three Nemetschek Group solutions are critical to 90 percent of their projects. The benefits include increased interoperability, efficiency gains, and improved results.
CSG is actively working on various high-rise, complex structures in the United States, including casinos, airports, hospitals, campuses, and other facilities. Additionally, the company operates a structural engineering division, Connected Structural Engineers (CSE). CSG and CSE use BIM for cost estimation, simulations, scheduling, energy analysis, structural design, fabrication, erection, and facility management on all of their projects. On 90% of its projects, the company relies on three Nemetschek Group products to build its design and fabrication processes.

From the beginning of 2006, when the industry turned to 3D modeling, CSG used SDS2. Unlike Revit, SDS2 was chosen to be used for both the design and manufacturing stages. Furthermore, James Warner, founder and owner of Connected Structural Group (CSG) has been using RISA engineering software for 20 years and Bluebeam Revu for 10 years.
“In CSGs workflow, almost every project starts with SDS2 as the model base. SDS2 is used for 80 percent of CSGs steel detailing and 20 percent structural design from the ground up. Bluebeam is then leveraged for collaboration both in and out of the office. Before we started to use Bluebeam, our processes were challenging. We were prone to losing track of a document once it was sent around the office for checking and redlining. With Bluebeam everyone sees the markups, who has picked up that markup, and then it can be back-checked,” Warner explains. “With more people working remotely these days especially during the pandemic, we are also benefiting significantly from Bluebeams real-time collaboration features.”
During construction, RISA analyzes the structure for erection sequencing, quick loading, stability, and deflection. Additionally, the technology aids in interpreting seismic winds when it comes to designs; without specialized software, tall structures, in particular, would take months to analyze.
“For CSG, the additional benefits of working with the Nemetschek solutions include the interoperability between programs and Nemetscheks customer focus. The support centers are always prompt at getting back and supporting us to get new products up and running. And the Nemetschek Group has a very interesting portfolio. We are currently also looking at Solibri. The model coordination and checker functionality could be extremely helpful for us,” Warner concludes.
