Michael Phifer

Michael Phifer is a seasoned professional in facilities engineering services who currently serves as the principal, manager of regional services, Terracon.

When technical excellence and visionary leadership intersect, the product is always leaps and bounds ahead of the industry standard. Michael Phifer exemplifies this. He has spent over a decade shaping the future of building enclosure consulting through relentless innovation, servant leadership and a commitment to meaningful impact.

From the moment he joined Terracon’s Charlotte office in 2013, Phifer brought an energy and clarity of purpose that set the tone for a distinguished career. His expertise spanning building evaluation, enclosure design, forensic testing, peer review, commissioning and quality assurance quickly became an asset for high-stakes projects across the education and healthcare sectors. Over the next decade, he immersed himself in every layer of the work. His deep involvement across K–12 schools, university campuses and healthcare facilities gave him firsthand insight into how the built environment impacts lives.

Phifer’s rise through Terracon’s ranks has been marked by key milestones. In 2016, he was named Facilities Division Young Professional of the Year—an early testament to his leadership potential. Three years later, he was recognized as the company-wide Technical Professional of the Year, an honor that reflected his contributions to elevating standards in building performance and client service. Today, as the manager of regional services, Carolinas, he leads operations for a multidisciplinary facilities group, guiding teams through high-stakes projects with calm confidence while nurturing a culture of accountability and building client trust across one of the nation’s fastest-growing regions.

Beyond his technical mastery, his dedication to mentorship and education makes Phifer a standout leader. Whether speaking at national conferences or writing thoughtprovoking articles, Phifer enjoys helping budding peers in their professional journeys. His publications, including Roof Recovering: Maximizing Function and Service Life and Maintenance Maximizes Parking Structure Investment, reflect technical insight and a deep understanding of client needs and long-term value creation.

Phifer’s engagement with the broader industry is equally impressive. He has served as president of the Carolinas Chapter of the International Institute of Building Enclosure Consultants and was a longstanding member of the Engineering Technology and Construction Management Industry Advisory Board at UNC Charlotte—his alma mater. These roles underscore his belief that leadership means giving back to the professional community and helping cultivate the next generation of technical experts.

Currently pursuing an MBA from Auburn University’s Harbert College of Business, Phifer is keen on sharpening his strategic capabilities, reinforcing a lifelong commitment to growth and reinvention. This move aligns perfectly with his ethos of never settling, always building.

In an era when sustainable construction, resilience and energy performance are non-negotiables, leaders like Phifer are essential. With every project, publication and opportunity to serve, he is helping shape a more inclusive, future-ready and value-driven industry.
